What to Do When Your Siblings Refuse to Help You Care for Your Aging Parent

May 8, 2026

If you are the sibling who does everything while others do nothing, you are not alone. Caregiving responsibilities fall disproportionately on one family member in most families.

Have the conversation in person, not by text. Come with a written list of everything you currently do — every appointment, every medication, every call to insurance. Most uninvolved siblings genuinely do not know the full scope.

Ask for specific things, not general help. "Can you handle the insurance calls every month?" is a yes or no question. "I need more help" invites vague offers that never materialize.

Bring in a neutral third party. A family therapist or social worker can facilitate the conversation in a way that you — who are exhausted and resentful — probably cannot.

If they still refuse, protect yourself legally and financially. Make sure your name is on any power of attorney. Keep records of what you spend and contribute.

Let go of the expectation that fairness will happen spontaneously. The goal is a workable arrangement, not justice.
