How to Talk to Your Employer About Your Caregiving Responsibilities

May 8, 2026

Approximately 60 percent of family caregivers are also employed. Most manage the tension between work and caregiving in silence.

The Family and Medical Leave Act provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year to care for a seriously ill parent, spouse, or child.

Many employers have more flexibility than employees realize. Remote work, adjusted schedules, and temporary reduced hours are common. Come with a specific proposal: "I need to shift my start time to 9:30 for the next three months."

Frame it around your output: "I can deliver the same results with this adjustment."

Know your rights before the meeting. Review your company's leave policy and FMLA eligibility. If your employer responds badly, document the conversation. Retaliation against caregivers is illegal in many states.
